Azrael is a coyote with blood-red fur and has scars on his muzzle. He was a child who was neglected by all in his family. He sought attention by joining a local gang, and though a young rookie, exceeded their expectations until it got out of hand; when robbing someone, he would always shoot the clerk, even after getting the money. Eventually they got tired of him taking all the winnings, and threw him out a window, the glass cutting up his face and giving him the scars. Azrael went solo and became a master killer. Eventually he was jailed, but bailed out by a mysterious scientist. The scientist grafted a sponge-like device to Azrael's heart, which allowed him to extract a pint of blood per second from any animal merely by touching them, also allowing Azrael to transform into real blood and back, alter his DNA to change his appearance and biologic traits, and triple the danger of any object he holds, from a 2X4 to a shotgun. The scientist did this so Azrael could return the favor by retrieving a runaway robot, but instead Azrael killed him and went on the loose as well.
